What Is Express Entry?
Express Entry is the online system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to manage applications from skilled workers under three federal economic immigration programs: the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).
Eligible candidates create an online profile and enter the Express Entry pool. Profiles are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and IRCC conducts invitation rounds to invite selected candidates to apply for permanent residence.
Express Entry Programs
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
The Canadian Experience Class is designed for eligible skilled workers with qualifying Canadian work experience. Language requirements and other program conditions apply.
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
The Federal Skilled Worker Program is for eligible skilled workers with qualifying foreign work experience. Applicants must meet minimum requirements related to skilled work experience, language ability and education, and must also meet the program's selection criteria.
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for eligible skilled tradespeople who meet the program's work experience, language and other requirements. Education is not a minimum program requirement, although eligible education can affect CRS ranking.
How the Express Entry Process Works
- Confirm eligibility: Determine whether you meet the requirements of at least one Express Entry program.
- Prepare key information and documents: This may include language test results, education information, work history and other supporting details.
- Create an Express Entry profile: Eligible candidates enter the pool and receive a CRS score.
- Wait for an invitation round: IRCC conducts different types of rounds, including general, program-specific and category-based rounds.
- Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA): If invited, you currently have 60 days to submit the permanent residence application.
- Submit a complete application: Supporting documents and information must match the information declared in the Express Entry profile.
Understanding Your CRS Score
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is used to rank eligible candidates in the Express Entry pool. Your score can be influenced by factors such as age, education, official-language ability, Canadian and foreign work experience, and certain additional factors.
A qualifying provincial nomination through an Express Entry-linked Provincial Nominee Program can provide 600 additional CRS points. You can also use our CRS calculator as a planning tool and review Provincial Nominee Program options where relevant.
Category-Based Express Entry Rounds
IRCC also conducts category-based invitation rounds. These rounds may identify candidates based on criteria such as official-language ability, work experience in selected occupations, education or other economic priorities. Categories and eligibility criteria can change, so current IRCC instructions should always be checked before relying on a category-based pathway.
Documents Commonly Needed
Document requirements depend on the program and the individual profile. Common documents or information may include:
- Valid passport or travel document
- Approved English or French language test results
- Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), where applicable
- Education records and supporting credentials
- Work experience letters and employment evidence
- Proof of funds, where required
- Police certificates and medical examination documentation at the applicable stage
- Provincial nomination documents, if applicable
- Additional documents requested by IRCC based on your circumstances
Common Express Entry Issues to Avoid
- Choosing a NOC that does not accurately match your actual job duties
- Claiming CRS points that cannot be supported with documents
- Allowing language test or ECA results to expire
- Providing work-history information that does not match supporting evidence
- Missing program-specific proof-of-funds requirements where they apply
- Waiting until after an invitation to start collecting important documents

Express Entry FAQs
What programs are managed through Express Entry?
Express Entry manages the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program. Some provincial nominees also use Express Entry through enhanced Provincial Nominee Program streams.
What is a good CRS score?
There is no single CRS score that guarantees an invitation. Invitation thresholds vary by round type, candidate pool and IRCC selection priorities. It is better to assess your current score and available ways to strengthen your profile than rely on a fixed target.
Does creating an Express Entry profile guarantee permanent residence?
No. An eligible profile allows you to enter the pool, but it does not guarantee an invitation to apply or approval for permanent residence.
Can a provincial nomination improve my CRS score?
Yes. An eligible Express Entry candidate who receives and accepts a qualifying provincial nomination can receive 600 additional CRS points.
How long do I have after receiving an Invitation to Apply?
IRCC currently gives invited candidates 60 days to submit their permanent residence application. Requirements can change, so always confirm the deadline shown in your IRCC account and current official instructions.
Can AVIORA help if I am outside Canada?
Yes. AVIORA works with clients in Brampton and also supports eligible clients remotely through virtual consultations and secure communication.
